A document in a Meridian Enterprise vault must go through one or more workflow states and transitions in order to be revised. The states and transitions make up a single workflow. When not in a workflow, a document is in the Released state, which means that it is not under change. All other states indicate that the document is in a process of change. A workflow can be made up of several transitions.

In the default workflow of a document type, the Start Change transition changes a document from the Released state to the Under Change state and begins a new revision of the document. The Release transition returns the document to its Released state where the document becomes the new current revision. The Revoke Document transition returns the document back to its previous revision in the Released state.
